Eleven people, including some members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), have been rescued after gunmen attacked vehicles along the Aloma–Egane Expressway in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The incident occurred at about 4:40 p.m. on Wednesday, around Ogene Zaria, near the Ogene Zaria–Onicha-Igo Junction.

According to the Kogi State Police Command, the armed attackers emerged from the bush and blocked two buses travelling in opposite directions before abducting some of the passengers.

Other passengers were reported to have escaped into the surrounding bush during the attack.

The police said the Divisional Police Officer in Ofu, upon receiving a distress call, led a joint security team to the scene, where two abandoned vehicles were recovered.

The vehicles were identified as a white Peace Mass Transit Hummer bus and a yellow 18-seater bus.

The rescued victims were taken through the necessary procedures and debriefed before being allowed to continue their journeys.

The police said security operations are ongoing in the surrounding forests as personnel intensify efforts to rescue the remaining victims and apprehend the perpetrators.

The Command also assured residents and travellers along the route that all available operational and intelligence resources are being deployed to secure the area and ensure the safe recovery of the remaining abductees.

Authorities urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies.
