📚 *Taking a journey back in time!*

This episode of *From the Archives with Benjamin Ubiri* tells the story of *Obajana — How Nigeria Stopped Importing Cement and Started Building Itself.*

For decades, Nigeria paid a premium to import cement while the limestone beneath Kogi State lay untapped. In 1981, Aliko Dangote started as a cement trader, but when privatization came in 1999, he acquired Benue Cement and set his sights bigger — building Obajana Cement Plant from the ground up.

When Obajana opened in 2007, it became Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest cement plant at 5 million tonnes a year. Today it produces over 16 million tonnes, making Nigeria a producer and exporter and opening the market for BUA, Ashaka, Ibeto and others.

This was more than a cement plant. It was proof that Nigerian resources, backed by Nigerian capital, could out-build decades of dependence.
