The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has alleged that some APC governors are opposing the proposed Rainbow Coalition because they want to influence the emergence of National Assembly leaders after the 2027 elections.
Speaking on National Television in Abuja, Wike specifically named Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Hope Uzodimma, and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, as among those opposed to the coalition.
Wike alleged that the governors want to influence the election of National Assembly members who would subsequently support their preferred candidates for the leadership of the two chambers.
“APC in their ongoing party primaries, the governors, in their own wisdom, believe that they should be able now to put senators or House of Reps members who they will dictate to who will become the next Senate President or the Speaker,” he alleged.
The allegation comes after APC governors publicly rejected political arrangements they said could weaken the party or affect its candidates in the 2027 elections.
Wike, however, maintained that his support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election does not mean the PDP or other parties must abandon their candidates for governorship and legislative elections.
He cited the 2023 elections, when members of the G5 supported Tinubu for president while their parties contested other elective positions.
