The Imo State Police Command has identified and detained six officers captured in a viral video allegedly assaulting a young man in Ikeduru Local Government Area of the state.

According to a statement on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, the incident occurred on June 22 at Nduhobokwe, Uzoagba, and came to the Command’s attention after the video began circulating on social media.

He said following a review of the footage, the Command identified the officers involved as Inspector Ugochukwu Ibe, Inspector Nwachi Chimezie, Sergeant Ugoezuhu Austin, Corporal Michael Obi, Corporal Ebuka Onwuegbu, and Corporal Amos Sunny.

said the Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, has ordered a comprehensive investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the level of culpability of the officers involved.

He disclosed that all six officers have been taken into custody while disciplinary procedures have already commenced in line with the regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.

The spokesperson said the Command maintains a zero-tolerance stance on police brutality, misconduct, and any violation of citizens’ rights, stressing that the conduct of the officers shown in the video falls short of the professional standards and ethical values expected of police personnel.

“The actions of the officers as seen in the video are inconsistent with the values, ethics and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force,” Okoye stated.

He assured residents that the investigation would be conducted thoroughly and transparently, adding that the outcome of both the probe and disciplinary process would be made public at the appropriate time.

The incident has generated reactions on social media, with many Nigerians calling for accountability and sanctions against officers found guilty of misconduct.
