No fewer than 5,000 members and supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The defectors, mainly from the Ogun West Senatorial District, joined the APC on Sunday at a ceremony held in Ilaro, headquarters of Yewa South Local Government Area.
They were received into the APC by Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, the party’s governorship candidate, and the state APC Chairman, Yemi Sanusi.
Speaking at the event, former Ogun PDP Chairman, Sikirullahi Ogundele, said he led several prominent members of the opposition party into the APC to escape what he described as “political slavery.”
Ogundele said he spent seven years in the PDP before deciding to leave the party.
He also pointed to the movement of some governors and other prominent politicians away from the PDP as evidence, in his view, of the party’s internal crisis.
He argued that remaining in the PDP would amount to “political suicide” for experienced politicians who, like him, had decided to leave.
