The 10th House of Representatives Constitution Review Committee says it will, in July, begin zonal public hearings across the country’s six geopolitical zones as part of efforts to amend the 1999 Constitution.
The exercise the committee notes will be conducted in two phases to allow citizens share their views on proposed amendments covering governance, security, fiscal federalism, and inclusive representation.
This is according to the Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Kalu, who also chairs the Constitution Review Committee, while speaking at a joint session with Senate and House secretariats in Abuja on Friday.
According to him, the first phase will hold from Friday, 11 July to Sunday, 13 July 2025, focusing on northern zones:
North Central:
Minna Centre: Kogi, Kwara, Niger
Lafia Centre: Nasarawa, Plateau, Benue, FCT
North West:
Kaduna Centre: Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Katsina
Sokoto Centre: Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi
North East:
Gombe Centre: Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba
Maiduguri Centre: Borno, Yobe, Adamawa
The Deputy Speaker adds that the second phase, scheduled from Friday, 18 July to Sunday, 20 July 2025, will cover southern zones:
South South:
Yenagoa Centre: Bayelsa, Edo, Delta
Calabar Centre: Cross River, Rivers, Akwa Ibom
South East:
Enugu Centre: Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu
Owerri Centre: Imo, Abia
South West:
Lagos Centre: Lagos, Ogun, Oyo
Akure Centre: Ondo, Osun, Ekiti
Kalu says the committee aims to ensure that “the voices of all Nigerians are heard and their concerns addressed” during the review.
He notes that the exercise will prioritise key amendment areas, including gender equity, inclusive governance, police and security reforms, judicial independence, fiscal restructuring, and devolution of powers.
“This constitutional review process is perhaps the most comprehensive in Nigeria’s history,” he says.
“We are considering amendments grouped into thematic areas that reflect the aspirations of the people.”
