Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to establish a seaport in the South-East to boost trade and economic activities in the region.
Kalu made the call at the weekend during the commissioning of projects in Aba, Abia State, where the President was represented by the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi.
He stressed that a functional seaport would unlock the economic potential of the South-East and strengthen Nigeria’s overall growth.
The Deputy Speaker, who represents Bende Federal Constituency, also commended Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, for his strides in improving infrastructure.
He, however, urged the state government and the people of the South-East to give due recognition to President Tinubu for releasing resources to states following the removal of fuel subsidy.
“If we need more from the President, we must give the true credit to the President so that he will release more for Governor Otti to do more for Abia State,” Kalu said.
He further emphasized that development should transcend partisan politics, calling for stronger collaboration between federal and state governments for the good of the people.
On the demolition of Igbo properties in Lagos, Kalu pleaded with the President to intervene and appealed to the Lagos State Government to provide an opportunity for affected residents to regularize their documents rather than face outright demolition.
“It bleeds our heart that within this hard time, houses are being destroyed. My plea is for accommodation to be given so our brothers can rectify their documents,” he said.
