The Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) has taken another significant step toward strengthening grassroots rugby with the announcement of a comprehensive coaching and medical course set to hold in Abeokuta.
The programme, organised in collaboration with the Ogun State Government, will run this April at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena.
It is designed to develop aspiring coaches and medical personnel while expanding access to rugby among young Nigerians.
As part of the eligibility requirements, participants are expected to have completed foundational World Rugby training modules, including Rugby Ready, T1 Rugby (non-contact), and introductory courses in coaching as well as player welfare and medical care.
The curriculum will focus on safety, core game principles, and effective athlete management—key pillars for sustainable rugby development.
According to organisers, the initiative forms a central part of NRFF’s long-term strategy to build a solid rugby structure by investing in human capacity at the grassroots level and encouraging broader participation nationwide.
Adding to the excitement, the training programme will run concurrently with the 3rd edition of the Abeokuta Rugby 7s Tournament.
The competition continues to grow in profile following a thrilling previous edition that saw Cowrie RFC defeat Racing RFC 26–21 in a gripping final.
