The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on political leaders to prioritise the welfare of citizens and embrace selfless service, citing worsening economic conditions facing workers across the country.
In an Easter message, NLC President, Joe Ajaero, says the period should serve as a time for reflection on leadership and governance, stressing that public office must be anchored on sacrifice, as well as selfless service.
The labour body drew attention to the growing burden on Nigerian workers, pointing to rising living costs, insecurity, and inadequate infrastructure as key concerns affecting livelihoods.
It criticises policies that have transferred hardship to citizens through low wages, high transportation costs, unreliable electricity supply, persistent poverty, warning that such conditions are undermining productivity and widening inequality.
According to the NLC, the current socio-economic situation places significant pressure on households and limits opportunities for economic advancement, while also weakening public confidence in governance.
It calls on government at all levels to implement reforms aimed at improving public services, strengthening economic fairness, and ensuring the safety and well-being of citizens.
The NLC also emphasised the need for urgent intervention in critical sectors such as transportation and power, stating that persistent challenges in these areas continue to affect daily life and economic activity.
The Congress said governance should focus on national development and social justice rather than personal or elite interests, adding that meaningful change would require sustained civic engagement and collective action.
