Pope Leo XIV Pushes Peace Agenda, Brushes Off Trump Criticis

By Sofiat Adenekan-Abdul

Pope Leo XIV has reiterated the Catholic Church’s commitment to peace and dialogue, firmly distancing the institution from political entanglements amid criticism from Donald Trump.

Speaking to journalists on Monday at the start of his African tour, the pontiff emphasized that the Church’s mission is rooted in the Gospel, not in political debate or ideological confrontation.

His remarks come in response to recent comments by Trump, who labeled him “liberal” and questioned his views on crime and global security. However, the Pope declined to engage in a back-and-forth, underscoring the Church’s distinct role.

“We are not politicians. I do not see my role as that of a politician, and I do not want to enter into a debate,” he said.

The pontiff cautioned against interpreting religious teachings through partisan lenses, warning that the Gospel should never be used to justify division or deepen political fault lines.

Instead, he doubled down on his core message—peace.

“I continue to speak strongly against war, seeking to promote peace, dialogue, and cooperation among nations,” he stated.

Highlighting the devastating human toll of ongoing global conflicts, Pope Leo XIV urged world leaders to pursue reconciliation and diplomacy over violence.

“Too many innocent lives have been lost. There is a better way—ending wars and promoting peace,” he said.

Despite the criticism directed at him, the Pope made clear that his stance remains unwavering.

“I have no fear of any administration when it comes to sharing the message of the Gospel.”

Reaffirming the Church’s position, he stressed that its role is to serve as a moral compass and a voice for peace—standing above political divides while advocating for unity, compassion, and global harmony.
