Enugu is ramping up preparations to host the 2026 National Sports Festival, as the National Sports Commission (NSC) has officially confirmed the event timeline for what is branded the Coal City Games.
The Director General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, announced that the opening ceremony will take place on November 27, with the multi-sport event running through December 11.
Participating states are expected to arrive between November 25 and 26 ahead of the official kickoff.
Speaking in Abuja during the inaugural meeting of the Main Organising Committee (MOC), Olopade stressed that the schedule is final and “sacrosanct,” leaving no room for adjustments.
The timeline, he noted, was finalized after consultations with Peter Mbah, who is spearheading the hosting efforts. Olopade praised the Enugu State government’s commitment to infrastructure development, highlighting the pace and quality of ongoing projects ahead of the festival.
He expressed confidence that the 2026 edition will raise the bar in both organization and funding, citing the involvement of Premium Trust Bank as the lead sponsor—a development he described as a major milestone for the Games.
According to the NSC boss, while the previous edition in Abeokuta earned widespread acclaim, the Enugu Games are positioned to surpass it in overall delivery and financial backing.
As part of ongoing reforms under the Commission’s RHINSE agenda to reduce hosting costs, the number of sports has been streamlined to 20. Fifteen events are compulsory, while host states can select five additional sports.
Core events for the festival include athletics, para-athletics, badminton, para-badminton, basketball, wheelchair basketball, boxing, cycling, football, judo, gymnastics, swimming, table tennis, para table tennis, tennis, taekwondo, mixed martial arts, weightlifting, para powerlifting, and wrestling.
With firm dates, strong backing, and ambitious planning already in motion, Enugu is poised to deliver one of the most memorable editions of Nigeria’s premier sporting event.
