NSITF Trains Lagos Officials on Employees’ Compensation Scheme Implementation

By Chinedu Echianu

The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Lagos State Government in the full and effective implementation of the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS) across the state’s public service.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive of NSITF, Oluwaseun Falaye, gave the assurance on Wednesday in Lagos during a sensitisation workshop organised for Employee Relations Officers drawn from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

Falaye said the Fund is fully prepared to provide both technical and operational support to ensure seamless implementation of the scheme, which is designed to protect workers in the course of their duties.

“We bring not only the legal and institutional mandate, but also the technical expertise, operational experience, and systems required to ensure effective and seamless implementation,” he said.

He explained that the workshop was aimed at equipping participants with practical knowledge of the ECS, including its benefits, compliance requirements, payroll processes, payment schedules, and the responsibilities of officers tasked with driving implementation across MDAs.

According to him, the success of the scheme will depend largely on the efficiency and commitment of frontline officers responsible for execution.

Falaye described the initiative as a critical step toward strengthening workforce protection and institutional accountability within the Lagos State public service. He noted that the ECS, established under the Employees’ Compensation Act 2010, provides coverage for workplace injuries, occupational diseases, disabilities, and deaths arising in the line of duty.

He added that the scheme guarantees medical care, rehabilitation services, compensation for temporary or permanent disability, and financial support for dependants of deceased workers.
The NSITF boss further observed that Lagos State already possesses strong administrative structures and efficient payroll systems, which would facilitate easier integration of the scheme into existing processes.

He expressed optimism that full implementation of the ECS would boost employee confidence, enhance risk management in government institutions, and further consolidate Lagos State’s reputation as a leader in public sector reforms.

In his remarks, the Lagos State Head of Service, Bode Agoro, reiterated the state government’s commitment to ensuring the welfare of its workforce.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Public Service Office, Mrs. Sunkanmi Oyegbola, Agoro said Lagos, as the “Centre of Excellence,” would continue to lead in adopting policies that guarantee employee welfare and protection.

He said the implementation of the ECS would provide workers with greater peace of mind and improve productivity across the public service.

Agoro also urged directors and heads of human resources across MDAs to take ownership of the process to ensure smooth and effective implementation.

He further disclosed that an NSITF desk office would be established in the state to enhance coordination and support for the programme.
