The Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, has called on African countries to develop home-grown solutions to the political, legislative and institutional challenges facing the continent.
Prof. Sulaiman made the call on Tuesday in Abuja, while receiving a three-member delegation from the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute (ESAMI), led by its Business Development Manager, Global Market, Eunice Ndyagenda.
In a statement signed by Mohammad Abdulkadri Media Adviser to DG NILDS, Prof. Sulaiman stresses the need for stronger collaboration among African institutions, arguing that the continent possesses the expertise, manpower and facilities required to build the capacity of legislators and public institutions without relying heavily on foreign partners.
He questioned why African parliamentarians continue to seek capacity-building opportunities in Europe and America when institutions within the continent offer world-class facilities and internationally recognised expertise at lower costs.
According to him, strengthening African institutions through partnerships and knowledge-sharing would not only reduce costs but also promote regional integration and sustainable development across the continent.
Prof. Sulaiman, a former Minister of National Planning, assured the ESAMI delegation of NILDS’ commitment to deepening cooperation in areas of staff development, research and institutional strengthening, stressing that Africa must work together to address common challenges.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Eunice Ndyagenda, commended the management of NILDS for expanding opportunities for collaboration and expressed optimism that both institutions would build on existing partnerships to advance capacity development and institutional growth in Africa.
