The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has provided prosthetic limbs and rehabilitation support to 78 workers who sustained permanent disabilities from workplace accidents, completing the latest phase of its Prosthesis Provision Exercise aimed at restoring mobility, independence and livelihoods.
Speaking during the presentation of the programme’s final report in Abuja, the Managing Director of NSITF, Barrister Oluwaseun Faleye, praised the commitment of prosthesis providers, beneficiaries, employers and the Fund’s monitoring team for ensuring the successful execution of the intervention.
Represented by the Executive Director (Operations), Mojisola Macaulay, Faleye said the Claims and Compensation Department closely monitored the exercise from its commencement in April 2026 through to completion.
He said every beneficiary approved under the programme underwent comprehensive assessment, was fitted with the appropriate prosthesis, received training on its use and was discharged after satisfactory evaluation.
“The cooperation and commitment demonstrated by the prosthesis providers, beneficiaries, employers and the monitoring team greatly contributed to the successful completion of this intervention,” Faleye said.
He explained that beneficiaries who could not participate because they could not be reached, declined to attend after notification or had died were replaced with individuals on a supplementary list to ensure the programme achieved its target.
According to him, the intervention delivered eight above-knee prostheses, one hip disarticulation prosthesis, 11 below-knee prostheses, 12 below-elbow prostheses, five above-elbow prostheses, one trans-humeral prosthesis and 40 silicone partial hand prostheses, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 78.
Also speaking, the General Manager, Claims and Compensation, Nkiru Ede-Ogunnaike, said beneficiaries received end-to-end rehabilitation services, including assessment, measurement, prosthetic fabrication, fitting, gait and functional training, evaluation and final discharge.
She noted that beneficiaries expressed satisfaction with the quality of care received, adding that the programme had significantly improved their mobility, functionality and overall quality of life while advancing the Fund’s mandate of supporting employees who suffer work-related disabilities.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Solomon Sunday, an employee of Zodoson Industries in Abia State, described the intervention as life-changing.
He said many injured workers had battled depression and uncertainty after losing their limbs in workplace accidents but had regained confidence and hope through the prostheses and skills support provided by NSITF.
“We are deeply grateful to the Fund for giving us our lives back.
I can now look forward to a brighter future, and the Fund has also given me the opportunity to acquire new skills to earn a living. We thank God for using NSITF to change our stories,” Sunday said.
