Nigeria enjoyed mixed fortunes in athletics at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as Chukwuebuka Enekwechi claimed gold in the men’s shot put, while Tobi Amusan settled for bronze in the women’s 100-metre hurdles.
Enekwechi produced a superb throw of 21.07 metres in the fifth round to clinch Nigeria’s seventh gold medal of the Games, edging New Zealand’s Tom Walsh, who recorded 21.03 metres, while England’s Scott Lincoln finished third with 20.99 metres.
The victory marks a significant milestone for the Nigerian thrower, who delivered when it mattered most to emerge Commonwealth champion and further strengthen Team Nigeria’s impressive showing in Glasgow.
In the women’s 100-metre hurdles, Amusan’s quest for a historic third consecutive Commonwealth title ended with a bronze-medal finish after clocking 12.60 seconds in the final.
The reigning African champion had entered the race as one of the favourites after posting a wind-assisted 12.19 seconds in the heats—the fastest time ever recorded at the Commonwealth Games under any conditions. However, she was unable to reproduce the same performance in the final.
Devynne Charlton of The Bahamas stormed to gold in 12.33 seconds, while Jamaica’s Megan Simmonds claimed silver in 12.41 seconds.
Despite missing out on a third straight title, Amusan once again demonstrated her class and consistency on the global stage, adding another major medal to her growing collection.
While Enekwechi celebrated a golden triumph, Amusan’s bronze ensured Nigeria continued to make its mark on the athletics track, with both athletes contributing to the country’s medal haul at the Games.
