Ride-hailing company Uber has ended its operations in Nigeria and Uganda, withdrawing its services from the two countries after 12 years in the Nigerian market.
Uber said the decision followed a review of its business but stressed that the withdrawal would not affect its operations in other African countries.
The company launched in Lagos in 2014 and grew into one of Nigeria’s biggest ride-hailing platforms.
Its exit comes after years of complaints and protests by drivers over fares, commission rates and working conditions.
Uber assured that its help centre would remain open until September 23 to assist riders and drivers with final account settlements and outstanding disputes.
The withdrawal marks Uber’s third exit from a Sub-Saharan African market in less than two years. The company left Ivory Coast in 2025 and ended its Tanzania operations in February 2026.
Uber now operates in four African countries; Egypt, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa.
The company said its decision to leave Nigeria was unrelated to the recent directive by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria on e-hailing operations at the country’s airports.
