Gunmen have killed 11 people, including a pregnant woman, after storming a house in KwaMakhutha township, south of Durban, South Africa.

The attack happened shortly before 11pm on Tuesday, September 22, when 14 people were gathered inside the home in the Ziko area. Police said three people survived with injuries.

According to the South African Police Service, the attackers entered the house and opened fire on those inside. Ten victims died at the scene, while another died after being taken to hospital.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli confirmed the attack and described the incident as a major shock to the community.

Police have not confirmed a motive for the shooting. However, preliminary investigations showed that some of the victims were known to Crime Intelligence in connection with suspected illegal activities. Police said a feud between rival groups could not yet be ruled out.

Local broadcaster eNCA reported that the attackers forced those inside into one room before opening fire. They also reportedly set fire to a vehicle belonging to one of the victims.

Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane has ordered a 72-hour tracking operation to find and arrest those responsible.

Police said investigators are following a promising lead as the manhunt continues.
