The Chief of Defence Staff Independence Day Military Badminton Championship 2026 has ended on a high note, crowning champions after a keenly contested display of skill, discipline and sportsmanship as Nigeria celebrates its 66th Independence Anniversary.

Held at the Mambilla Barracks Badminton Court, the championship brought together athletes from across the Armed Forces in an inter-service competition designed to promote physical fitness, camaraderie, teamwork and professional excellence.

Lance Corporal Kayode Oyeniran emerged champion in the Men’s Singles, claiming the gold medal after an impressive campaign. Private Kevin Doso won silver, while Staff Sergeant Suleiman Ayuba and Private Daniel Nudamajo shared the bronze medals.

In the Women’s Singles, Corporal Caroline Adani clinched the gold medal, with Lance Corporal Tanko Naomi taking silver. Sergeant Folashade Okinyemi and Master Warrant Officer Okoji C.A. completed the podium with bronze medals.

The Mixed Doubles title was won by Corporal Caroline Adaji and Lance Corporal Kayode Oyeniran, who secured gold. Corporal Stephen Andrew Otu and Lance Corporal Tanko Naomi claimed silver, while Lance Corporal Folashade Akinyemi and Daniel Nudamajo, alongside Apollos and Master Warrant Officer Okoji C.A., shared the bronze medals.

Representing the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, at the closing ceremony, Rear Admiral Gideon Kashim delivered the CDS’ remarks, emphasising the importance of sports in maintaining the physical, mental and emotional fitness of military personnel.

The CDS described the championship as more than a sporting contest, noting that badminton develops concentration, perseverance, fortitude, accuracy and resolve — qualities that are equally important in military service.

He congratulated all participants for their competitive spirit and commended the medalists for their outstanding performances.

Earlier, the Director of Sports, Defence Headquarters, Air Vice Marshal P.B. Philips, commended the organisers, officials, coaches and support staff for successfully staging the championship despite the short preparation period.

Philips disclosed that the event was changed from the Chief of Defence Staff Basketball Championship held the previous year to badminton in less than a month, describing the successful organisation of the competition as a demonstration of the resilience and professionalism of the Armed Forces.

He also highlighted the contribution of military sports to Nigeria’s international sporting achievements, noting that military athletes have continued to represent the country with distinction.

The championship concluded with the celebration of sporting excellence and unity, reinforcing Defence Headquarters’ commitment to using sports as a platform for fitness, talent development, teamwork and stronger bonds among personnel across the Armed Forces.
