The Gombe State Government has declared a cholera outbreak in Kedo village, Billiri Local Government Area, following two deaths linked to diarrhoea and vomiting on October 4.
The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Adamu-Danladi Bojude, disclosed this during a media briefing on Wednesday, saying health workers had treated and discharged 74 patients.
Bojude said the government deployed a Rapid Response Team to investigate the outbreak and provide free treatment at the Primary Health Centre in Sheila. He added that no patient remained on admission.
According to the commissioner, the state had recorded seven consecutive days without a new case as of October 21. He said the government would declare the outbreak over on October 24 if no further cases emerged.
Bojude attributed the state’s efforts to an annual cholera prevention plan implemented with the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency and development partners. The programme targets more than 150 cholera hotspots across Gombe’s 11 local government areas.
