President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has hailed Nigerian workers for their resilience, patriotism, and unwavering commitment to national development, as the country joins the rest of the world to mark International Workers’ Day.
In a statement personally signed by him to commemorate the 2026 celebration, Akpabio praised workers across all sectors for their sacrifices and contributions, describing them as “the engine of the nation’s economy and the true heroes of democracy.”
The message, made available through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, emphasized the critical role Nigerian workers play in sustaining the country despite prevailing economic and workplace challenges.
“On this auspicious occasion of Workers’ Day 2026, I join millions of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to commend and congratulate our resilient, industrious, and patriotic workforce whose sweat and sacrifice continue to sustain the heartbeat of our nation,” Akpabio said.
He paid tribute to professionals across sectors, including teachers, healthcare workers, farmers, artisans, traders, civil servants, security personnel, and private sector employees, noting that their daily efforts remain the backbone of national progress.
Acknowledging the pressures faced by workers ranging from rising living costs to demanding work conditions the Senate President reaffirmed the commitment of the 10th National Assembly to policies that promote workers’ welfare.
According to him, ongoing legislative efforts are focused on securing a living wage, improving workplace safety, reforming pension systems, and driving job creation initiatives that uphold the dignity of labour.
He pointed to the passage of the National Minimum Wage Act and the rollout of workers’ welfare packages as clear demonstrations of this commitment.
Akpabio also called on employers in both public and private sectors to prioritize the wellbeing of their workforce, stressing that a motivated labour force is essential for national productivity and sustainable growth.
He further commended organised labour, particularly the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, for their continued engagement and patriotism in advocating for workers’ rights.
“The Senate will continue to partner with organised labour to ensure that the voice of the Nigerian worker is heard and respected in the chambers of policy and law,” he added.
Reiterating the Senate’s commitment, Akpabio pledged sustained efforts toward building a future where every Nigerian worker can thrive with dignity, hope, and confidence.
