The Armed Forces of Nigeria has confirmed that its investigation uncovered allegations that some officers plotted to overthrow the government.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Defence Headquarters says investigations into disciplinary cases involving 16 officers have been concluded.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria hereby informs the general public that investigations into the matter have been concluded,” the statement said.

According to the military, the investigation report has been “duly forwarded to the appropriate superior authority in line with extant military regulations.”Major General Uba disclosed that the probe was carried out “strictly in accordance with established military procedures,” adding that it “thoroughly examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel.”

The findings, the statement said, revealed that some of the officers are alleged to have engaged in activities “including plotting to overthrow the government, which are inconsistent with the ethics, values, and professional standards expected of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.”

As a result, officers with cases to answer “will be formally arraigned before the appropriate military judicial panels to face trial in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations.”

The Defence Headquarters said the move underscores the AFN’s commitment to accountability while “upholding the principles of fairness and due process.”

It further stressed that the measures being taken are “strictly disciplinary in nature” and form part of institutional mechanisms “to preserve order, discipline, and operational effectiveness within the ranks.”

The Armed Forces of Nigeria reaffirmed its resolve to maintain “the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty, and unwavering respect for constitutional authority.”
