CBN Raises Alarm Over Digital Scams Targeting Nigerians

By Oluwakemi Kindness

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has raised the alarm over the circulation of fraudulent messages, emails, and online communications falsely claiming to originate from or be associated with the Bank, warning that the activities are aimed at misleading the public and compromising personal security.

The Bank said the fake messages often prompt recipients to click suspicious links and spread false information about its leadership, licensing processes, and policy decisions. According to the CBN, these tactics are designed to hack personal accounts and steal sensitive information.

Hakama Sidi-Ali, Acting Director of Corporate Communications, who issued the advisory on behalf of the Bank, said the CBN’s official website remains www.cbn.gov.ng, urging members of the public to rely only on verified channels for information.

The Bank advised Nigerians to refrain from clicking unknown links or sharing personal details on suspicious websites, adding that all CBN communications should be verified through its official website and recognised media platforms.

It also encouraged the public to report any suspected fraudulent emails, websites, or messages to relevant law enforcement authorities.

The apex bank reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s financial system, noting that it is strengthening its cybersecurity frameworks in collaboration with relevant agencies to combat rising digital fraud.
