Chelsea have attributed their disappointing 2025/26 campaign to the mid-season resignation of former head coach Enzo Maresca, saying his unexpected departure disrupted the club’s plans and affected the team’s stability.
In a statement released on Monday, the Premier League club said Maresca informed senior officials in the autumn of 2025 of his intention to succeed Pep Guardiola as Manchester City manager at the end of the season.
Although the Italian was under a long-term contract, Chelsea said he became fully focused on pursuing the opportunity before unexpectedly resigning during the Christmas period, forcing the club into an unplanned managerial change midway through the season.
According to the club, Maresca’s exit had a significant impact on the team’s performances and contributed to a difficult campaign.
Chelsea also confirmed that confidential settlement agreements had been reached separately with both Manchester City and Maresca, under which compensation will be paid to the London club.
The Blues said they took the necessary steps to protect the interests of the club, its players, supporters and reputation after Maresca decided not to see out the season.
Looking ahead, Chelsea expressed confidence in new head coach Xabi Alonso, describing him as a manager of integrity with the leadership qualities required to restore the club’s fortunes.
The statement is the first public explanation from Chelsea regarding the circumstances surrounding Maresca’s departure during the 2025/26 season.
