The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) says an awaiting-trial inmate, Osita Thomas, 28, has escaped during a court appearance in Edo State.
The Edo State Command disclosed this in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Aminu Suleman, statement made available to journalists in Benin on Thursday.
The command said Thomas escaped last week while appearing in court for trial over alleged conspiracy and stealing.
He was being held at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Auchi.
The service urged members of the public with information about his whereabouts to contact the nearest custodial centre or police station.
The Controller of Corrections in Edo State assured the public that the command would make every effort to recapture the escapee.
He added that the service had strengthened security measures to prevent further incidents.
