The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Nigerian-American citizen Adegoke Oluwatobi Adams over an alleged cross-border vehicle import scam involving more than $320,000, estimated at about ₦434.9 million.
In a statement shared on its official X account on Friday, the anti-graft agency says Adams is under investigation for alleged criminal breach of trust and obtaining money under false pretences.
According to the EFCC, preliminary findings suggest the suspect is linked to a United States-based syndicate that allegedly targets Nigerians through fraudulent vehicle importation schemes.
Investigators said Adams allegedly advertised a 2024 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG while residing in the United States, circulating photographs of the luxury SUV and promising to purchase and ship it to buyers in Nigeria.
The Commission alleged that two victims paid a combined $320,000 for the vehicle, with one transferring $145,000 through an intermediary and another paying $175,000.
The EFCC further claimed that Adams is connected to a network specialising in defrauding Nigerians through fake vehicle export deals and disclosed that he allegedly has a prior criminal record in the United States relating to the unlawful acquisition of vehicles.
Operatives of the EFCC’s Ilorin Zonal Directorate reportedly arrested the suspect upon his return to Nigeria. The agency said investigations are ongoing and that he will be charged in court upon their conclusion.
The case highlights growing concerns over online vehicle import scams, with authorities urging prospective buyers to verify dealers thoroughly and use reputable channels when making overseas vehicle purchases.
