European Council President, Antonio Costa has welcomed the reported agreement between the United States and Iran to end the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, describing it as a positive step toward regional stability and lasting peace.
In a post on X on Monday, Costa said he looked forward to an end to the costly conflict and the full restoration of freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit routes.
“I look forward to an end to this costly war and to the full restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” Costa wrote.
The reported agreement, announced by the United States and Iran, is expected to bring an end to hostilities across several fronts in the region, including Lebanon, and pave the way for the reopening of the strategic waterway.
While details of the deal remain limited, officials from Washington and Islamabad said the agreement is scheduled to be formally signed in Switzerland on Friday, marking what could be a major diplomatic breakthrough after months of conflict that have claimed thousands of lives and disrupted global energy markets.
The European Union said it stands ready to support efforts aimed at securing a durable peace in the region.
US President Donald Trump also celebrated the development, announcing that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen following the signing of the agreement.
In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump declared that the deal with Iran was complete and authorised the immediate lifting of the US naval blockade in the area.
“The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete,” Trump wrote.
He added that ships would once again have free passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil exports, helping ease concerns over energy supply disruptions and rising oil prices.
The agreement is expected to be closely watched by world leaders and financial markets, given its potential impact on regional security and global energy flows.
