FCT Begins Screening for Sports Association Elections

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Sports Department has commenced the screening of aspirants seeking election into the boards of various sports associations ahead of the 2026 FCT Sports Associations elections.
The exercise, being conducted by the FCT Steering Committee, started on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at the Conference Hall of the FCT Sports Department in Abuja and is expected to last for five days.
On the opening day, candidates representing eight sports associations, athletics, basketball, table tennis, badminton, golf, boxing, gymnastics, and handball appeared before the screening panel.
The process continued on Friday with aspirants from judo, karate, and scrabble undergoing assessment by the committee.
More Associations Scheduled for Screening
According to the timetable released by the organisers, screening will resume on Monday with candidates from archery, cricket, taekwondo, traditional sports, kickboxing, tennis, hockey, and darts expected before the panel.
The exercise will conclude on Tuesday with representatives from rugby, wrestling, baseball, parasports, and volleyball.
Screening Committee Members
The screening committee is chaired by Mr. Godwin Bamigboye, while Mr. Agbor Clinton serves as secretary.
Other members of the committee include Dr. Charles Agadu, Iyiola Ogundele, Dr. Whoba Esther, Albert Atiwurcha, Niyi Busari, Uche Nwudoh, Adakole Jones, and Dave Jegede.
Focus on Competence and Qualifications
During the screening sessions, aspirants are being evaluated based on their qualifications, competence, and overall performance before the committee.
Successful candidates are expected to emerge as board members of their respective sports associations following the elections, the date for which is yet to be announced
