The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has called for faster issuance of court orders and judicial authorisations, saying delays are slowing criminal investigations, prolonging prosecutions and contributing to congestion in police detention facilities.
Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the Chief Judge of the High Court of the FCT, Justice Husseini Baba Yusuf, in Abuja.
A statement on Friday by the command spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, qoutes Sanusi as saying timely approval of search warrants, bench warrants and other legal processes is critical to effective policing, successful prosecution of criminal cases and the overall administration of justice.
He also expressed concern over the prolonged prosecution of some criminal cases, noting that delays often leave suspects in police custody for extended periods and increase pressure on detention facilities.
The police commissioner said effective policing and justice delivery depend on sustained collaboration between the police and the judiciary, adding that both institutions must continue working together to strengthen the rule of law in the Federal Capital Territory.
Responding, Chief Judge Husseini Yusuf welcomed the police chief and assured him of the judiciary’s continued support in promoting efficient justice delivery.
The Chief Judge said he was confident that Sanusi’s leadership would further strengthen security and the administration of justice in the FCT. He also acknowledged the concerns raised by the police and pledged to provide the necessary institutional support to improve cooperation between both institutions.
The meeting ended with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening the criminal justice system, enhancing public confidence in the rule of law and deepening collaboration between the police and the judiciary.
