The Federal Government has defended the recent airstrike in Jilli, Borno State, describing it as a targeted counter-terrorism operation driven by credible intelligence, while ordering a full investigation into reports of civilian casualties.
In a statement issued by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, authorities maintained that the strike was carried out under Operation HADIN KAI by the Nigerian Air Force and was not indiscriminate.
According to the government, the Jilli axis in Gubio Local Government Area had long been classified as a high-risk, insurgent-controlled zone, with strict restrictions on civilian movement. The area, locally referred to as “Kasu Daulaye,” was described as a key logistics hub for Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters.
Officials said the operation followed weeks of intelligence gathering, surveillance, and reconnaissance, which confirmed the presence of террорист elements coordinating attacks and collecting levies within the enclave.
The government further cited the arrest of a 15-year-old ISWAP courier in Ngamdu on April 12, whose confession reportedly reinforced intelligence about ongoing insurgent activities and the use of civilians, including minors, in logistics operations.
Governor Babagana Zulum was also quoted as confirming that Jilli and nearby Gazabure markets had been officially shut down years ago due to sustained terrorist control.
Despite defending the operation, the Federal Government acknowledged reports of civilian harm and has directed a comprehensive and independent review of the incident. The probe, it said, will assess the intelligence, targeting process, and execution, with a view to ensuring accountability where necessary.
Authorities also pledged to strengthen operational safeguards to better protect civilian lives, while continuing efforts to dismantle terrorist networks in the region.
Humanitarian support is already being coordinated with Borno and Yobe State governments, alongside emergency agencies, to assist affected communities.
Reiterating its stance, the government urged residents to adhere strictly to security advisories, avoid restricted zones, and cooperate with security agencies. It also called on the media to ensure accurate and responsible reporting, warning that misinformation could undermine national security efforts.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to defeating terrorism, insisting that ongoing military operations will not be deterred by isolated incidents, even as it seeks to balance security objectives with civilian protection.
