The Federal Government has launched a mobile learning programme aimed at strengthening teacher training and expanding access to professional development for educators across Nigeria and four other African countries.
The initiative, unveiled in Abuja on Monday, is being implemented through a partnership involving the Federal Ministry of Education, UNESCO’s International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (UNESCO-IICBA) and the Pan-African University.
The three-day Master Training Programme, scheduled for July 21 to 23, will equip teachers and school leaders with digital learning skills, with a special focus on empowering female educators.
Funded by the Government of Japan under the Pan-African Virtual and Electronic University (PAVEU) initiative, the programme covers Nigeria, Algeria, Cameroon, Kenya and South Sudan.
According to the Federal Ministry of Education, the mobile learning platform will enable teachers to access professional development courses anytime and anywhere through a low-data, offline-friendly system designed to overcome challenges such as poor internet connectivity, distance and limited training opportunities.
The ministry said the initiative will broaden access to continuous professional development, particularly for female teachers and school leaders, by providing flexible, technology-driven learning that supports career growth and improved classroom delivery.
It added that enhancing teacher quality through digital innovation remains a key pillar of the Federal Government’s education reform agenda, stressing that continuous capacity building is essential to creating an inclusive, resilient and future-ready education system.
