International sports business consultant and communications expert Emeka Enyadike has declared football Nigeria’s biggest entertainment industry, insisting that its global influence, commercial value and economic potential surpass those of Afrobeats and Nollywood combined.
Speaking during a FIFA World Cup viewing event at Atlantic Blue Hotel & Resort in Abuja, the Chief Executive Officer of EEXsports said football’s ability to attract the world’s biggest music stars to its grandest stage highlights the sport’s unmatched global appeal.
“People celebrate Afrobeats and Nollywood, but football is even bigger,” Enyadike said. “The FIFA World Cup features global stars like Burna Boy, Shakira and Justin Bieber, yet they are only part of the spectacle. Fans tune in primarily because of football. That shows the scale of the industry’s global reach and commercial potential.”
Enyadike urged Nigerians to begin seeing sports as a strategic economic sector capable of generating employment, attracting investment and driving national development.
Using Nigeria as an example, he noted that the country’s passion for football remains strong despite the Super Eagles’ absence from the ongoing FIFA World Cup.
“Thousands of Nigerians are still gathering to watch matches involving countries like Spain and Argentina. That level of interest, even without Nigeria participating, demonstrates the enormous power and global appeal of football,” he said.
The sports business expert, who has worked in the oil sector and with FIFA in information management and communications, said EEXsports was established to bridge the knowledge gap in the industry by mentoring young Nigerians in sports journalism, sports broadcasting and sports business.
According to him, the initiative aims to build a sustainable sports ecosystem by connecting experienced professionals with the next generation while making world-class knowledge and opportunities accessible within Nigeria.
He added that EEXsports would continue to bring together key stakeholders across various sectors to stimulate investment, foster innovation and unlock the vast economic opportunities within Nigeria’s rapidly growing sports industry.
