Security operatives at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, have successfully repelled an overnight attack by suspected gunmen, killing one of the assailants during a fierce gun battle.
The attack occurred at about 11 p.m. on Wednesday when the armed men attempted to breach the institute’s security perimeter. Alert security personnel engaged the attackers in a coordinated response, forcing them to retreat after one of the gunmen was killed, while others reportedly escaped with injuries.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the institute’s Head of Public Affairs, Dr. Osime Samuel, confirms that the security perimeter was never breached and assured that all participants, staff, residents and facilities remained safe.
The institute said security agencies have launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects, while surveillance and other security measures have been strengthened within and around the Kuru campus.
NIPSS also urged staff, participants and members of the public to disregard misinformation capable of causing panic, stressing that the safety of everyone at the institute remains its highest priority.
The latest attack comes less than two weeks after another assault on the institute and the surrounding community, in which three people, including security personnel, lost their lives, raising fresh concerns over security in the area.
