The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has honoured 10 police officers killed while fighting suspected bandits in Kebbi State.
IGP explained that the officers died on August 10 after intercepting a heavily armed group along the Mafinkuku axis of Sakaba Local Government Area.
Police initially reported that 17 suspected bandits were killed and four motorcycles destroyed during the encounter.
However, the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Special Intervention Squad, Abayomi Shogunle, says further assessments suggest hundreds of bandits may have been killed.
He said residents have also reported finding bodies in the forest, including 25 bodies discovered at one location.
Disu assured the families of the fallen officers that the police would continue to support them.
He also pledged to work with other security agencies and local communities to tackle banditry and other violent crimes.
