Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has pledged increased investment in sports development across the Nigeria Police Force, promising greater support for volleyball and other sporting disciplines.
Disu made the pledge on Saturday at the 3rd CGC Volleyball Premier League (First Phase) in Abuja after the Nigeria Police Volleyball Team defeated Sunshine Spikers.
Commending the team’s resilience and determination despite limited training resources, the police chief said their performance demonstrated the discipline and fighting spirit of officers.
“You have seen the tenacity of a policeman in action. I am so happy to have been here today, and they have made me so happy,” Disu said.
“They have done so well. How else can I honour them? By owning the sport and sponsoring it. Definitely, we will do something like this, not only for volleyball but for judo and every other sport.”
Disu said the Force would provide athletes with the support and resources they need to excel, stressing that outstanding performance would be rewarded.
“I can’t be the Inspector-General of Police and my men are doing well and not looking forward to the future. I will endeavour to ensure that I encourage them. How do I encourage them? By giving them everything that we know,” he said.
The Inspector-General said the renewed investment in sports forms part of efforts to boost officers’ morale, promote physical fitness and strengthen the welfare of personnel across the Force.
