The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has trained officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to strengthen enforcement of compulsory insurance laws and curb the use of fake motor insurance certificates.
The one-day training, held in Abuja, focused on improving compliance with Motor Third-Party Insurance and other mandatory insurance policies.
It also equipped police officers with skills to verify insurance policies and educate the public on the benefits of insurance.
Representing the Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive Officer of NAICOM, Olusegun Omosehin, Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon said the partnership between NAICOM and the police is vital to reducing the number of uninsured vehicles on Nigerian roads, protecting road users and boosting public confidence in the insurance sector.
He said insurance plays a critical role in protecting individuals, businesses and public institutions from financial losses caused by accidents and other unforeseen events, adding that stronger enforcement aligns with the provisions of the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025 and NAICOM’s drive to deepen insurance penetration.
Gam-Ikon urged police officers to use their daily interactions with motorists and business owners to promote compliance with compulsory insurance laws.
He said the commission would continue working with law enforcement agencies to increase insurance awareness, discourage fake insurance certificates and strengthen public safety while supporting Nigeria’s economic growth
