The President of the Nigeria Hockey Federation (NHF), Engineer Simon Nkom, and members of the federation’s board have congratulated Professor Ediga Agbo on receiving the prestigious Sultan Azlan Shah Award in recognition of his contributions to hockey development in Nigeria.
Agbo’s recognition coincides with the 50th International Hockey Federation (FIH) Congress in Doha, Qatar, which has brought together 112 National Associations to discuss the growth, development and future of the sport globally.
Nigeria’s delegation, led by Nkom and members of the NHF board, is participating in the congress as part of efforts to strengthen international partnerships, deepen collaboration and explore opportunities to advance hockey in the country.
Congratulating Agbo, Nkom praised his dedication to the sport, particularly his commitment to mentoring young umpires and strengthening officiating standards through knowledge-sharing and capacity development.
He described the award as a proud moment for Nigerian hockey and expressed appreciation to the international hockey community for recognising Agbo’s contributions.
“Professor Ediga Agbo’s recognition is a proud moment for Nigerian hockey. His commitment to developing the game, particularly through mentoring young umpires, deserves commendation,” Nkom said.
He added that the honour should inspire more stakeholders to invest in the growth of hockey in Nigeria.
In his response, Agbo expressed gratitude to the international hockey community, describing the award as encouragement to continue contributing to the sport’s development, especially through mentoring and preparing the next generation of officials.
“I am deeply grateful to the hockey community for this recognition. I see this award as an encouragement to continue contributing to hockey development in Nigeria, particularly through mentoring young umpires and sharing knowledge with the next generation of officials,” he said.
The professor also acknowledged the support of the NHF, fellow officials and other stakeholders who have contributed to his journey and the growth of hockey in Nigeria.
Agbo’s recognition underscores the importance of mentorship, professional development and sustained investment in the people responsible for officiating and nurturing the game.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s participation in the FIH Congress presents an opportunity for the federation to strengthen its international relationships, exchange expertise and pursue strategic collaborations aimed at expanding hockey’s reach and raising its standards across the country.
