Nigeria’s women’s beach volleyball team opened its campaign at the African Beach Volleyball Championship with a convincing 2–0 victory over Lesotho in Alexandria, Egypt.
The Nigerians dominated the opening set, cruising to a 21–8 win before Lesotho mounted stronger resistance in the second. Nigeria, however, maintained its composure to claim the set 21–18 and seal a straight-sets victory.
The championship, taking place at Abu Heif Beach until August 22, features 45 teams from 28 African countries, comprising 24 men’s and 21 women’s teams.
The competition doubles as a qualifier for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, with the men’s and women’s champions earning direct qualification.
The tournament is being held under the patronage of Alexandria Governor Engineer Ayman Atiya, with African Volleyball Confederation board member Aida Ismail chairing the Supreme Organizing Committee.
CAVB President Bouchra Hajij is also in Alexandria, following the matches and overseeing the smooth running of the championship.
Nigeria will now look to build on its impressive opening victory as the battle for continental honours and Olympic qualification intensifies.
