Team Nigeria kicked off its 2026 Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group III campaign on a winning note, edging Burundi 2-1 in a thrilling opening tie in Gaborone, Botswana.
The victory gives Nigeria an early boost in the race for one of the two coveted promotion places to the Billie Jean King Cup World Group II.
Competing against 11 other African nations, Nigeria is represented by Barakat Oyinlomo Quadre, Success Ogunjobi, Khadijat Mohammed, and Etoro Bassey—a quartet that reflects the country’s growing depth in women’s tennis.
Notably, all four players emerged through the DavNotch National Open Tennis Championship, highlighting the tournament’s success in developing elite Nigerian talent.
Nigeria’s determined performance against Burundi showcased the team’s resilience, composure, and fighting spirit as they overcame a stubborn opponent to claim a crucial opening-day victory.
