The Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) has stepped up preparations for the ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Division One Qualifier in Tanzania, with the Junior Female YellowGreens’ open camp entering its decisive selection phase in Benin City, Edo State.
After an initial round of assessments, the coaching crew has trimmed the training squad from 22 to 18 players as competition for places in the final team intensifies. The remaining players will continue intensive training while undergoing further evaluation ahead of the continental qualifier.
The current phase of camp is focused on testing the players in a high-performance environment, with emphasis on technical execution, tactical awareness, team chemistry and role clarity.
The team is also scheduled to play a series of practice matches against the senior women’s national team and other selected opposition to assess both individual performances and overall team readiness.
Head coach Sarah Bakhita said the camp is not only about identifying the most talented players but also about building a cohesive and competitive squad capable of delivering on the international stage.
“This phase of camp is focused on bringing the players together as a team, defining and mastering individual roles, and creating an environment where everyone understands their responsibilities. The practice matches will provide valuable opportunities to assess our progress and ensure we are prepared for the challenges ahead,” she said.
According to the NCF, the open camp remains a key part of its long-term high-performance programme, providing promising young cricketers with a structured pathway to national selection while instilling the standards required to represent Nigeria at international competitions.
With the final squad yet to be named, competition remains fierce as players continue to be assessed on performance, consistency, discipline, adaptability and their ability to perform under pressure.
The 18 players retained in camp are Christabel Chukwuonye, Shola Adekunle, Omosigho Eguakun, Beauty Oguai, Jessica Bienni, Deborah Bassey, Inyene Ubong, Peace Usen, Anointed Akhigbe, Chisom Okpe, Precious Simon, Jennifer Godwin, GodsGift Ezeali, Promise Oko-otu, Elizabeth Emmanuel, Praise Onaghise, Glory Idiahi and Favour Effiong.
