The Nigerian Army has unveiled plans to recruit and train an additional 28,000 soldiers in a significant expansion of its manpower aimed at strengthening the fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.
Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, announced the initiative on Friday during a press briefing in Abuja to herald activities for the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL).
He was represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), Major General Bamidele Alabi.
According to the Army Chief, the recruitment drive is being made possible by the establishment of a new training depot in Amasiri, Edda, increasing the number of recruit training institutions from two to three.
“Manpower is as important as the equipment required to fight insecurity,” he said, noting that the additional facility will enable the Army to recruit and train 28,000 more personnel to bolster ongoing security operations nationwide.
Beyond increasing troop strength, the Army said it has expanded its operational footprint by creating new brigades and units while reviewing its force structure to address emerging security challenges and close deployment gaps.
Oluyede also highlighted continued investments in modern military hardware, combat enablers and strategic partnerships designed to enhance operational effectiveness.
On personnel welfare, he said the Army’s “Soldier First” philosophy prioritises the well-being of officers, soldiers and their families, alongside improved infrastructure, recognition for gallantry and the integration of modern technology into military operations.
He reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to sustaining pressure on Boko Haram, ISWAP terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, separatist groups and other criminal elements, while pledging adherence to human rights standards and established rules of engagement.
Calling for public support, the Army Chief urged Nigerians to work alongside the military in promoting peace, unity and national development.
Meanwhile, activities marking the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration have commenced under the theme, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army.”
The programme features religious services, public lectures, literary competitions, media engagements, charity outreach and free medical services in Port Harcourt before culminating on July 6 with a ceremonial parade, military equipment exhibition and the African Land Forces Forum 2026, which will bring together military leaders, policymakers and defence experts from across the continent to discuss regional security and emerging defence technologies.
