The Northern Senators Forum has commiserated with the government and people of Kogi State over the death of former governor, Ibrahim Idris, popularly known as “Ibro.”
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Chairman of the forum, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, describe Idris’ death as a loss to Kogi State, the Igala people and Nigeria as a whole.
Yar’adua say the former governor was a remarkable Nigerian whose life reflected a commitment to national unity, peace and development.
Before entering partisan politics in 2003, Idris spent several decades in business, establishing Ibro Trading Company and investing in furniture manufacturing, construction, hospitality, property and general commerce.
The forum notes that his entrepreneurial career began in the 1970s, including the establishment of a furniture factory in Sokoto and Ibro Hotel.
It described him as an employer of labour, philanthropist and community builder whose businesses created opportunities for many Nigerians.
Idris served as governor of Kogi State from 2003 to 2012, making him the longest-serving governor of the state.
During his tenure, his administration was associated with interventions in infrastructure, water, education, healthcare and road development, among other sectors.
The Northern Senators Forum also notes that Idris’ continued influence in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Nigerian politics after leaving office, describing his relationships across the country as reflective of his pan-Nigerian outlook.
“Igala has lost a patriot; Kogi has lost an elder statesman; and Nigeria has lost a believer in the Nigerian project,” the forum said.
The forum extended its condolences to the Idris family, the Igala people, the government and people of Kogi State, and members of the PDP.
It prayed that Almighty Allah forgive the shortcomings of the deceased, reward his good deeds and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.
The forum also prayed for strength and fortitude for the family and others mourning his death.
