The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has organised a one-day orientation and induction seminar for the four clubs promoted to the top flight ahead of the 2026/27 season, as part of efforts to strengthen professionalism and improve league standards.
Held in Abuja, the workshop focused on familiarising the newly promoted teams with the operational, administrative and regulatory requirements of the NPFL, particularly in the area of club licensing.
Speaking during the seminar, NPFL Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi stressed that clubs competing in the elite division must meet standards that align with those of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA.
He explained that unlike in the lower division, top-flight clubs are expected to comply with strict regulations covering player contracts, infrastructure, medical services, security arrangements and match-day operations.
The sessions also addressed legal issues surrounding player registration and contractual obligations, administrative and sporting criteria, stadium and training facilities, and security protocols aimed at ensuring the safety of officials, players and fans.
Participants were advised to maintain appropriate training environments and adopt best practices that prepare teams for varying playing conditions throughout the season.
Representatives of the four promoted clubs attended the seminar, including Inter Lagos General Manager Gabriel Adigwe, Doma United Secretary Murtala Sambo, Ranchers Bees Secretary Jide Bodunde and Sporting Lagos Chairman Godwin Enakhena.
Enakhena described the programme as an eye-opener, noting that it provided valuable insight into the framework and expectations of competing in Nigeria’s top-flight league.
The NPFL is expected to hold a meeting with all 20 participating clubs on Tuesday as preparations continue for the commencement of the 2026/27 season.
