The Nigeria shooting sport Federation (NSSF), in partnership with Obetek Technologies, has launched the National Integrated Shooting Sport Platform (NISSP), a digital initiative aimed at promoting regulated sports, professional development and responsible firearms management in Nigeria.
The platform was unveiled in Abuja during the Army War College Nigeria Course 10/2026 Competition, which brought together military and paramilitary personnel, sports journalists, associations and other stakeholders.
Speaking as Special Guest of Honour, the Commandant of the National Defence College, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Ahmed, said the initiative would help participants improve their awareness, precision and proficiency.
Ahmed described the discipline as an important traditional military sport, particularly as Nigeria continues to confront insurgency and other security threats.
He urged participants to sustain regular practice after the competition, stressing that consistent training was necessary to improve accuracy and overall proficiency.
The NDC Commandant also welcomed the partnership with the NSSF, noting that while the military had previously collaborated with sports bodies in disciplines such as volleyball, basketball and football, the federation’s expertise made the partnership valuable.
NSSF President, Commodore Shettima Mohammed Shagir, said the competition was organised as a novelty match for participants of the Army War College course, providing an opportunity for them to demonstrate their abilities while maintaining physical and mental fitness.
He explained that the partnership would also contribute to responsible firearms management by creating a database of legitimate participants and ensuring that firearm owners are properly registered and vetted in line with existing laws.
According to Shagir, the NSSF is working closely with the Nigeria Police Force, whose Inspector-General of Police serves as the federation’s Grand Patron, to ensure that its activities comply with relevant laws and safety requirements.
He encouraged Nigerians interested in the sport to register through the platform and obtain professional coaching, stressing that the discipline promotes concentration, precision, responsibility and self-control.
The NSSF President said the NISSP would provide a structured platform for identifying, registering and developing enthusiasts and professionals, while supporting efforts to improve firearms accountability and contribute to national security.
He also called on members of the public, including those in rural communities, to take advantage of available digital platforms to register and access legitimate opportunities.
