The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Oyo State chapter, has directed churches across the state to strengthen security measures, suspend late-night activities, and consider fencing their premises following rising cases of abductions and kidnappings.
The directive is contained in a communiqué issued in Ibadan jointly signed by the state CAN Chairman, Rev. Elisha Ogundiya, and Secretary, Rev. Samuel Owolabi.
CAN urge churches to become more security conscious by deploying trained personnel and installing surveillance systems within their premises and surrounding areas.
It also advised churches without fences or gates to prioritise such construction as part of safety measures.
The association further recommends the suspension of late physical church activities, warning members to avoid unnecessary night movements. It also called on churches to conduct security assessments of guards and essential personnel, and warned against allowing strangers to sleep within church premises.
CAN also advised the public to limit travel during the period and comply with the Oyo State government’s ban on commercial motorcycle operations after 10:30 p.m.
Expressing concern over the security situation in the state, the association sympathised with families of victims of kidnapping and urged government at all levels to intensify efforts to secure their release.
It also call for better coordination in the handling of sensitive security information while reaffirming its commitment to working with authorities to promote peace and stability in Oyo State.
