Sandy stars as Rwanda Edge Nigeria by 11 Runs

By Arinzechi Chukwunonso

Esther Sandy’s fighting half-century and Christabel Chukwuonye’s all-round brilliance were not enough to prevent Nigeria’s Female YellowGreens from slipping to an 11-run defeat against hosts Rwanda Women in the Kwibuka T20 Tournament 2026 at the Gahanga Cricket Oval in Kigali.

After winning the toss and choosing to field, Nigeria produced a disciplined bowling performance led by Chukwuonye, who returned outstanding figures of 4 for 18 to restrict Rwanda to 131/8 from their 20 overs. Captain Favour Eseigbe claimed two wickets, while Lilian Ude chipped in with one wicket in an economical four-over spell.

Set 132 for victory, Nigeria’s chase was anchored by Sandy, who struck a fluent 63 off 53 deliveries, including nine boundaries, to keep her side in contention. Chukwuonye also added a useful 15 runs as the YellowGreens battled to stay in the contest.

Despite the spirited effort, Rwanda’s bowlers held firm in the closing stages, with Murekatete Belyse taking 3/21 to help dismiss Nigeria for 120/9 and secure an 11-run victory.

Although the YellowGreens fell short of the target, Sandy’s composed innings and Chukwuonye’s impressive all-round display stood out in an entertaining encounter that went down to the final overs.
