Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York to represent Nigeria at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), reaffirming the country’s commitment to global peace, sustainable development, and inclusive diplomacy.
His arrival was confirmed on Monday by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President.
Touching down at John F. Kennedy International Airport, Shettima was received by a government delegation that included Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Yusuf M. Tuggar, Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, and Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa, among others.
Acting on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Vice President will lead Nigeria’s delegation to the annual gathering of world leaders, where he is scheduled to deliver the country’s national statement and participate in a series of high-level engagements aimed at strengthening multilateral cooperation.
The 80th UNGA, themed “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations,” will run from September 24 to 28, 2024.
Officials say Nigeria intends to use the platform to highlight its stance on pressing global issues, deepen international partnerships, and project its leadership role on the African continent.
