Stakeholders, Youths Urge Deputy Speaker Kalu to Contest Governorship Race

By Oluwakemi Kindness

Leaders and stakeholders from Isiala Ngwa North and South Local Government Areas of Abia State have intensified calls on the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, to contest the 2027 governorship election.

The call was made during the inauguration of the Ikeoha Movement and the declaration of interest by Uzoma Ihuka to contest for the House of Representatives seat representing Isiala Ngwa Federal Constituency under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking at the event, Kalu expressed confidence in the administration of President Bola Tinubu, describing it as a unifying force that has strengthened the APC nationwide.

A statement by Udora Orizu, SA Press Affairs to Kalu quotes him as noting that while opposition parties continue to grapple with internal crises, the APC remains stable and focused on delivering progress.

According to him, the level of development under the APC-led Federal Government represents only a fraction of what lies ahead, particularly for Abia State.

The event also witnessed a wave of defections from opposition parties, especially the Labour Party, with new members citing renewed hope, purposeful leadership, and visible progress as reasons for joining the APC.

Kalu assured the new entrants of inclusive governance, emphasizing that the party is committed to engaging communities directly and implementing practical, people-oriented solutions.

Responding to the calls for him to run for governor, the Deputy Speaker acknowledged the growing support from across the state, including Bende and Obingwa, but said he would make his position known soon.

“I have received your request for me to run for governor of Abia State, but I will respond in the coming days,” Kalu said.

He explained that any formal declaration would be made in Umuahia, the state capital, in line with constitutional and political significance.

“When we talk about governorship… there is only one place… and that is Umuahia. It will not be in Isiala Ngwa, Obingwa or Aba,” he stated.

Kalu added that stakeholders across the state would soon be invited to converge in Umuahia, where he would give a definitive response to the calls.

The event ended with heightened optimism among party faithful, signaling growing momentum for the APC in Abia State ahead of the 2027 elections.
