President Bola Tinubu has urged Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, to promote unity and reconciliation following his victory in the recently concluded governorship election.
Tinubu gave the advice on Thursday when he received Adeleke at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The President urged the governor not to stigmatise or humiliate his opponents, stressing that winning an election should not be treated as conquering political rivals.
“Don’t stigmatise any of your opponents,” Tinubu told Adeleke, adding that the people of Osun State had chosen him to govern.
According to the President, any democrat who cannot celebrate a free and fair election does not deserve the benefits and happiness of democracy.
He urged Adeleke not to make any individual a victim of the election campaign, stressing that promoting unity would benefit not only Osun State but future generations.
“You did not conquer anybody. You won an election. That is the essence of democracy,” Tinubu said.
The President also advised Adeleke to demonstrate his appreciation to the people of Osun through his actions by expanding his political reach and working for the development of the state.
Tinubu reminded the governor that his position was a result of the support of the people and what he described as the will of God.
He said Adeleke was in a “very unique position to make history” and urged him to promote unity, peace and stability in Osun State.
