UN Proposes $14bn Budget for 2027

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has proposed a $14 billion budget for 2027 to support the organisation’s work on global peace, sustainable development and human rights.

Guterres presented the proposal in New York to the General Assembly’s budget committee, chaired by Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim.

Ibrahim described the proposal as a budget for a sustainable United Nations and pledged the committee’s commitment to a constructive review process.

Guterres said the budget reflects ongoing reforms under the UN80 Initiative, which aims to improve efficiency, accountability and the organisation’s response to global challenges.

The proposal includes 11,150 posts and $423 million for special political missions in 2027.

It also provides additional funding for technical cooperation, sustainable development, disability inclusion and the upgrade of Umoja, the UN’s enterprise resource planning system.

Guterres said the proposal followed a review of existing resources and potential savings while accounting for new mandates and the need to maintain effective programmes.
