By Arinzechi Chukwunonso

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has appointed Abdulquadri Jaiyeola as the alternate captain of its men’s volleyball team ahead of the second phase of the 2026 Comptroller General of Customs Volleyball Premier League.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Monday by the Head of Sports, Samuel Onikeku, who described the experienced player as a proven leader with an impressive record at both club and national levels.

According to Onikeku, Jaiyeola recently led Nigeria’s senior men’s volleyball team to qualification for the African Nations Championship qualifiers in Abidjan, a feat that underlines his leadership qualities and commitment to the sport.

“Abdulquadri Jaiyeola has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership both at the national and club levels. His experience and dedication make him a worthy addition to the team’s leadership structure as alternate captain,” Onikeku said.

He also recalled Jaiyeola’s contribution to the Nigeria Customs team during the 2021 African Men’s Club Championship in Tunisia.

Despite the latest appointment, Philip Akande will retain his role as captain of the men’s team, while Chris Udah and Princewill Okoi will continue as first and second assistant captains respectively.

Onikeku praised the players for their impressive performance during the opening phase of the league and challenged them to maintain their momentum as they prepare for the decisive stage of the competition.

“Our men’s team displayed a high level of professionalism, discipline and commitment throughout the first phase of the league,” he said.

“I urge the players to improve on that performance and remain focused as we head into the final phase of the competition. We must continue to complement our efforts with hard work, teamwork and consistency if we are to achieve our objectives.”

The Nigeria Customs men’s volleyball team will be aiming to build on its strong start when the second phase of the 2026 CGC Volleyball Premier League gets underway
